The music video was inspired by Madonna's admiration of  Marilyn Monroe  and mimicked the latter's performance of the song " Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend " from the 1953 film  Gentlemen Prefer Blondes .   It also featured actor  Keith Carradine , who played Madonna's love interest. The video was the first to showcase Madonna's acting ability, as it combined the dance routines of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" with the storyline of a man who impresses Madonna with daisies, rather than diamonds.  In a 1987 interview with  New York Daily News , Madonna said: Well, my favorite scene in all of Monroe's movies is when she does that dance sequence for 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend'. And when it came time to do the video for the song [Material Girl], I said, I can just redo that whole scene and it will be perfect.   Madonna thought that there are a lot of magical, mystical powers in the desert and that it is a magical place to be. It was inspired by the film  The English Patient  and  Martha Graham 's work. The music video premiered on February 16, 1998 on  MTV  at 4 p.m.The black goth gown outfit Madonna wears on the video was designed by  Olivier Theyskens , and provided by then-new collaborator, designer  Arianne Phillips . In an interview with  MTV News , Cunningham stated about his work with Madonna, saying that he thought Madonna became interested to work with him after seeing his  Aphex Twin -directed music video, " Come to Daddy " (1997). Madonna stated that she and her team thought of filming the video in Iceland, as the idea to the video was to go someplace cold and where there is snow, but declined the idea. LOS ANGELES, Jan. 4—  A charge that Madonna insulted Jews by using a Bible reference to a "synagogue of Satan" in a re-mix of her single "Justify My Love" seemed resolved with her quick denial of anti-Semitic intentions. Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, had denounced on Wednesday the "Beast Within" mix of the song, one of several versions released by Warner Brothers. In it Madonna quotes II Revelations 9: "I know your tribulation and your poverty and the slander of those who say that they are Jews, but they are not, they are a synagogue of Satan." In a letter sent to Madonna's manager, Freddy DeMann, Rabbi Cooper said the Wiesenthal Center was outraged and wanted the quotation withdrawn. "The imagery of 'Jew as Devil' has led to untold violence against the Jewish people and slander against Judaism over the course of the last 2,000 years," the rabbi wrote.
