No costume of Madonna's is as memorable as her conical bras, which she wore during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour. The bras, designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, became such iconic fashion pieces that an anonymous person spent $80,000 for one of the garments at a Christie's auction in November 2012, according to the Time.
And now, fans of the singer will once again be able to see one of these iconic bras at London's Barbican exhibition next year. The show is said to be a retrospective of Gaultier's work and it will feature various designs that put Gaultier on the fashion radar.
According to the Time, 140 couture and ready-to-wear pieces designed by Gaultier is expected to feature at "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From The Sidewalk To The Catwalk." And besides the various costumes worn by Madonna, the exhibition will also feature the ensembles Gaultier made for Bjork and Kylie Minogue.
Interestingly, Minogue too wore the conical bra made famous by Madonna for a raunchy shoot to promote her album Aphrodite, as among all Gaultier creations the conical bra is what has attained the iconic status. Since then many pop stars including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna have worn varying versions of the designs.
Madonna herself wore a design inspired by the conical bra during her MDNA tour last year. Though this bra was also designed by Gaultier, he gave it a skeletal cage-like structure, thereby giving the design a masculine feel.
Regarding the design Gaultier told WWD: "What I have done this time is a nod to the conical bra corset of the Blond Ambition tour but reinterpreted in 3-D, in patent leather on the outside with metallic leather on the inside."
"It's all about masculine and feminine, Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier classics reinterpreted for 2012."
