It was the second single from the soundtrack album Who’s That Girl. Madonna performed the track on her Who’s That Girl Tour and the following Blond Ambition Tour. Madonna‘s performance of the track – Who’s That Girl Tour – was transmitted via satellite to the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards.

Causing a Commotion was written and produced by Madonna Stephen Bray. It became a Top 10 hit in the United States, Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Sweden.

Causing a Commotion was inspired by Madonna‘s relationship with then husband Sean Penn.

I don’t like violence. I never condone hitting anyone, and I never thought that any violence should have taken place. But on the other hand, I understood Sean’s anger and believe me, I have wanted to hit him many times. I never would, you know, because I realize that it would just make things worse. […] I felt like he was ‘Causing a Commotion‘ to purposefully distract me. I wrote this song and vented my frustration in it.
