Madonna opens gym in Sydney

Madonna may not be visiting Australia anytime soon, but her brand new venture in central Sydney is putting fitness first.
Yesterday the V-Club gym in downtown Druitt Street rebranded and reopened as part of the singer’s own Hard Candy global chain of fitness one-stop-shops.

This afternoon Same Same spoke to a staff member there who told us the gym is now decked out “with Madonna all around us” and that her music will now always play around the venue. When we were put on hold briefly, ‘Like a Prayer’ was played to us.
The venue spans four floors, with seven studios and even an outdoor training rooftop. Members have the option to choose from over 30 different styles of workouts, several designed by Madonna herself.

“Madonna works out daily, even during her world tours,” say the Hard Candy team. “She has used thousands of fitness centres and trained with some of the top personal trainers and dancers in the world. From this experience, she has developed a strong vision of the ideal exercise, dancing and workout environment.”
The first Hard Candy gym opened in Mexico City back in 2010, with Moscow and Santiago coming soon afterwards.

The photos of the venue on this page are from the HardCandy.com.au website – see more here.
The opening of her Sydney fitness centre is perhaps bad timing following recent local ill-will toward the entertainer. After fan outcry when it emerged she won’t be joining us Down Under on her MDNA tour next year, Madonna released an apology to Australia – see it here.
Would YOU get into the groove at Madonna’s Sydney gym? Let us know.

The Making of Madonna’s First Album Cover

Carin Goldberg — the art director behind Madonna’s debut album cover — spoke to  the Cut  about her first experience with the then-unknown pop star. It’s the first question that anybody asks me, even today: What was it like to work with Madonna? People think that maybe something dramatic or interesting or kind of wild might have happened, based on, you know, Madonna’s persona. But I would say that Madonna was probably the easiest job I ever had — the most cooperation from a recording artist I think I ever had. She was a true professional, even at that young age. It was ’83, and at that point I had my own small design firm. Warner Bros. called and asked me to do her cover as a freelance designer. When I got the call, I rolled my eyes, because it was another [musician with a] one-word name. At that time it had become cliché to have a one-word name, because of Cher, so I remember thinking, God, it’s going to be one of those. So I really went into it with very little expec...
