Did Madonna steal from Patricia Field? That question began floating around the blogosphere on Thursday afternoon after The Cut reported on a post from Patricia Field’s Tumblr called “MADONNA STOLE OUR VOGUE HATS!!“. In the controversial Tumblr post, one of the super-stylist’s employees claimed that Madonna had stolen the concept behind the brand’s black baseball hat with the word “Vogue” stitched onto them for merchandise that was sold on her recently completed MDNA World Tour.
Andy writes:
“During Madonna’s performance of her at Madison Square Garden this past year, one of our spies discovered… She is selling exact replicas of our Vogue hat as part of her tour merchandise!… Our own Patricia Field stylist, Hiraku, designed the snap back and we sell it as a T-shirt, headband and a beanie as well. They’ve been going like hotcakes here at the store and have become a staple of the Patricia Field brand this year. We get requests to send them to clients everywhere worldwide and people ask for them by name when they come into the store… Madonna is a thief! Do you really need an extra few thousand dollars? Shame, shame for stealing from those that inspire you!… Are we right to be offended by this, or should we just forget about it and move on?”
Sorry Andy, but you don’t have the right to be offended by this because Madonna did come up with the concept for the Vogue hat first. The black baseball hat emblazoned with the word “Vogue” has been around for decades; in fact, Oliver Crumes (one of Madonna’s dancers during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour) wears a version of the hat throughout Madonna’s 1991 Truth Or Dare documentary film.
Who’s copying whom now?
