Madonna was left shocked yesterday after a suspected thief plunged 25 feet outside her home as he fled police.
The pop superstar was in her £6million town-house as cops chased the fugitive through the streets of one of central London’s most exclusive areas.
Officers called out to the man to stop but he darted into a narrow lane adjoining the 52-year-old singer’s Mayfair mews house.
He attempted to clamber over a gate and climb over the side of one of the homes adjacent to Madonna’s.
But he fell, critically injuring himself at around 3.50pm on Friday afternoon.
A source close to Madonna said: “She heard a commotion during the afternoon around the back of the house.
“There was a lot of shouting and then suddenly there was an ear-piercing scream from a man. It appears he was making off from police and tried to scale the walls behind one of the mews houses where she lives.
“She immediately sent her driver out to investigate and report back. She was very concerned.
“After the man fell all the neighbours could hear a lot of shouting and screaming, the police were certainly in shock at what happened and the man was in a very bad way.
“An ambulance arrived in minutes and the police sent back-up to seal off the road and the crime scene. It was very upsetting.” The Material Girl’s driver was spoken to by police at around 6pm as the multi-millionaire waited for news inside.
Shortly after 8.30pm the mum-of-four was driven to the Kabbalah Centre in London with her 24-year-old boyfriend Brahim Zaibat in tow.
He also attended prayer meetings with her before Christmas.
They returned home at 10.30pm to find two police officers guarding the back of the property which had been taped off to seal the crime scene.
A forensics tent was seen at the rear where the man is believed to have fallen. A pal of Madonna’s said: “She was certainly shocked by the incident but is just glad the man wasn’t more seriously injured, which would have been absolutely devastating.”
The previous night Madonna visited an exclusive Mayfair club to hold auditions for dancers for her eagerly awaited next world tour.
She stayed there until 2.30am, and was joined by her breakdancer boyfriend and guests at hotspot Aura.
Visitors to the exclusive members’ club were treated to a dancing spectacle as the VIPs all took to the floor to strut their stuff and showed off some incredible dance moves.
Madge is believed to have settled the £12,000 bill but stuck to water as she enjoyed the show.
A Met Police spokesman said last night: “Police were alerted at approximately 3.50pm on Friday, January 7, to reports of a man believed to have fallen from a building.
“The man has been taken to a central London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.”
The matter has been passed to the Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission is also investigating.
