November 8 2005 // When Michael Parkinson interviewed Madonna..!!

IT WAS a moment that stands out in Michael Parkinson's 37 years of interviewing the rich, the famous, the powerful, the talented and the bizarre.

After years of pursuing her, in 2005 Madonna finally agreed to appear on Parkinson. She appeared at the top of the stairs in skin-tight jeans, boots and with her muscular arms on display in a sleeveless red top.
Her blonde hair was blow-dried to perfection and as the Parkinson theme tune played she confidently took her seat opposite her host.
"We were in talks with her people for about 20 years but it always came back that she'd only talk about this and she'd only talk about that and she won't talk about that," Parkinson says.
"And we said, 'well, it's our show and we are never told what to say by any of our guests. And when Madonna is ready to talk to us on those terms it will be wonderful to interview her'. In 2005 we finally had a call, saying, 'Yes, she'll do it'. And we did a one-woman show and she was absolutely brilliant."
During the show, Madonna agreed to perform a couple of her hits but as she sang the studio had technical problems and fell into darkness.
"And there was a marvellous moment for me which defined the entire business of interviewing stars," Parkinson says.
"We had a technical breakdown and these girls appeared, all her minders, with these little miners' lights clipped to their foreheads. They had various jobs, such as looking after her hair, her make-up, her clothes, etc.
"But, as I stood back, I watched one of these girls with real fascination because I couldn't make out what she was doing. She had a long, thin stick in her hand and at the end was a cotton bud. And she was following Madonna around. And then, at one point, Madonna turned towards her, stood still and the girl put the cotton bud up Madonna's nose to look for bogeys.
"And I thought that's the job I want when I retire to be Madonna's bogey finder!"
Parkinson began hosting a talk show in 1971 after starting out at the age of 17 as a newspaper reporter.
Later he was asked to write and present a program called Cinema for a major British TV network, discovering the "cushier side" of journalism, as he describes his television career.
Comfortable on screen and able to build a rapport, Parkinson was then offered a talk show by the BBC. It was a way of filling a gap in the BBC's summer schedule but it became one of the longest running talk shows in television history.

The Making of Madonna’s First Album Cover

Carin Goldberg — the art director behind Madonna’s debut album cover — spoke to  the Cut  about her first experience with the then-unknown pop star. It’s the first question that anybody asks me, even today: What was it like to work with Madonna? People think that maybe something dramatic or interesting or kind of wild might have happened, based on, you know, Madonna’s persona. But I would say that Madonna was probably the easiest job I ever had — the most cooperation from a recording artist I think I ever had. She was a true professional, even at that young age. It was ’83, and at that point I had my own small design firm. Warner Bros. called and asked me to do her cover as a freelance designer. When I got the call, I rolled my eyes, because it was another [musician with a] one-word name. At that time it had become clichĆ© to have a one-word name, because of Cher, so I remember thinking, God, it’s going to be one of those. So I really went into it with very little expec...

In honour of  amFAR  (The American Foundation for AIDS Research), Gaultier held a fashion benefit whose runway included everything from lip-synching to Dr Ruth dressed in rubber to raise money for a cause that devastated (and continues to devastate) communities around the world. "Tonight will be about protection... wear rubber and protect yourself!" – Jean Paul Gaultier "Tonight will be about protection... wear rubber and protect yourself!" explained Gaultier before the show.
